Some thoughts about Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow #3

Can Supergirl protect Ruthy now they're in a mysterious new town?

Kara and Ruthy's hunt for Krem has lead them to a quiet place called Maypole but things might be that way because of a reason.

Missed last issue like with most books lately but considering how familiar I am with Tom King's work, is safe to say that I didn't miss anything too important plot-wise.

And this is perfectly exemplified in this chapter since is for the most part a pretty self-contained story where the heroines arrive to a little town where corruption is rampant and they have to deal with it in their own way while learning about their history and how this is all connected to Krem which may lead them to their next destination. Is overall a pretty nice premise with decent enough content, interesting themes and is somehow part of the overarching plot. All the things that I love in a single chapter! I should automatically love this right?!

... *sigh* Here's the catch with most of King's work, there's always a glaring flaw and as usual with him, it has to deal with his narration. Seriously, I get the theme of the book about how Ruthy is telling in retrospective to the reader about her travels with Supergirl but is just so annoying to see narration boxes appear when all what's happening on page could have been told by simple dialogue and even better, by the art itself. Is a classic example of King's "tell, don't show" which, while not as awful as Brian Bendis', is still pretty obnoxious.

This is especially bothersome because Bilquis Evely's artwork is glorious, full of beautiful scenarios, characters and detail, is a shame this is at many points hidden under narration boxes.

Mixed bag overall, things to like, things to hate.
