Some thoughts about World's Finest #12

How will a date between Robin and Supergirl go?

Dick and Kara have finally decided to have a dinner together but they might realize that their personalities are more different than they expected.

This worked really well in some parts and not so much in others.

Mark Waid makes a standalone story focusing on Supergirl and Robin and he tries to makes this romantic encounter as awkward as possible. The "date gone wrong" works in so many levels here that it makes you automatically uncomfortable by watching them terribly interact with each other while also dealing with their superhero jobs. Weirdly enough, this also works in a pretty natural and believable way which makes me suspect that Waid might have been writing from a personal experience here and boy, do I feel bad for him if something like this happened to him (I mean, we all have bad dates but damn).

HOWEVER, this comes at the cost of Waid once again writing Dick Grayson badly. One of the most important aspects of the character is that he's naturally charming, not too forceful about it, nor too geeky, just natural. The Dick Grayson here however, couldn't try harder and at times he sounds more like Tim Drake by how nerdy he can be on a date. I guess Waid really wanted to push the idea of "Sometimes personalities don't click" but to do so, he simply had to get one of these characters completely wrong (and makes me glad that Waid never got to write Nightwing).

Dan Mora remains on art duties and his work is still amazing with beautiful characters all-around and perfect storytelling.

Fun read but more appropriate characterization would be appropriate.
